At noon, I went to the MEChA meeting feeling hopeful and inspired by Mr. Marshall’s words. While many of the same students had returned, I was disappointed that Moses wasn’t among them.

After Micaela went over the minutes from the last meeting, she directed her next question to Julie.

“Do you have any more information about your idea of collecting clothes for Friendly Helpers?”

Julie’s face was beaming. “Yes, I talked to my aunt and she thought it was a really good idea. She gave me their number.”

“Nice work,” Micaela complimented her.

“Since I’m your club advisor,” I said, raising my voice slightly and moving closer to the students, “I’d be more than happy to contact Friendly Helpers.”

“Órale, Mr. G.,” Manuel quickly agreed.

Thanking me, Micaela added, “Why don’t we talk to our parents about this and start gathering up some clothes?”

Marissa waved her hand in the air. “My mom always saves the clothes that my little brothers outgrow. I’ll talk to her today.”

“Hey, baby, you can text me anytime, you know?” Chuy said, blowing her a kiss.

“Shut up, you little weasel,” Marissa shouted back as the room filled with laughter.

After the meeting, I was making my way back to the main quad when I spotted Moses coming out of the library. Although he tried to pretend that he hadn’t seen me, I hurried after him, forcing him to pause.

“We missed you at the MEChA meeting.”

“I’ve got better things to do,” Moses said, avoiding my eyes. Then, before I could say another word, Moses was gone, leaving me frustrated as hell.
